My office is starting to take shape. No new photos available at this time.
Yesterday I received 20 of the 21 Preacher’s Outline & Sermon bibles that I ordered. The other volume should arrive in a few weeks. Additionally there are probably 10 more volumes from the Old Testament that I have not yet ordered. That would probably be another $300, something I’m not yet ready to order. When I receive a few more yearly payments from the hosting of my web design customers, I’ll order them. Of course, I’ll pay for my college tuition for Spring, 2007, before doing anything. But, in time, I’ll get all available items and order new sections as they become available.
Tonight I put together the last remaining book shelf. This one is the same width as the bigger ones; however it only stands 48″, rather than 72″ high. I have three usable shelves, each high enough to put the 3 ring binder bibles in. This unit will also sit on my desk, as the other smaller unit does. I had to move items around on my desk, but I think this will work well.
If I could deal with an even more cramped space, I could actually get one more 72″ unit into the office; however, it would be very tight when coming into the room. We’ll see. Right now I don’t need the extra unit, especially in light of the fact that I’ll be pretty much emptying one entire existing book case. That will allow me to spread my books out more. At that point I’ll probably move all of my genealogy books to the empty unit. That will leave me the current bible book case (which is now used), with an empty unit beside it. I’ll probably use the bottom shelve on each of these units for storage. I find that the fold down ‘file’ boxes fit very well on these bottom shelves. That will be good for storing supplies (paper, loose items, CDs, etc).
When finished, I think the office will be very functional for my purposes. That’s all that really matters. I would assume most people won’t really like the look, but they won’t be in there working. The office is only about 10×11, but contains:
In addition, there is a printer and a scanner / printer on moveable carts under one section of the desk. Under the other desk section is a movable typewriter stand which I use to spread out when I need a little more desk area. Behind my monitor is another shelving unit which is about 10″ deep x 17″ high x 48″ long.
I still have room for a small TV, cable box, cable modem, and light on one of the metal legal size file cabinets and a fan and light on top of the other. Additionally, I have 3 lights on the desk area, and a light on top of one of the book cases. It points it’s light downward onto two of the books cases. I’ll add another duplicate light later to light up the other two book cases.
Five large Civil War prints are on the walls, in addition to 3 plaques I received years ago for achieving various rankings in two chess variation games. I removed my college degree which was hanging on one wall, two large plaques commemorating the book I wrote for the Sons of Confederate Veterans about the Flag Tag Gate in Maryland, a Cal Ripken plaque, a Baltimore Colts tin plate of the cover of the Baltimore Sun when they won a championship, a Cal Ripken tim plate of the cover of the Baltimore Sun when he set the consecutive games played record, and my lovely Masonic Past Master’s plaque presented to me in 1989 when I stepped down as Worshipful Master of Palestine Lodge #189. Most of these items would have been hidden by the new book cases. While are these items mean quite a lot to me, right now, having space for all of my books and having shelf space for books to come, is the most important thing.
New photos will appear when the project is complete.
