Brandi Bigfoot – Christmas 2005

Looks like Brandi ‘Bigfoot’ didn’t want to be left out of the photographs. When she saw me fooling with the digital camera, she pretty much demanded that I take her photo. You can see how she got her nickname Brandi ‘Bigfoot’.

Christmas 2005

This was a good Christmas. Everyone was in good health.

I have created a page on the website with photos from yesterday.
Below is a photo of Nora and I. Notice the beautiful scraves made by our friend Elizabeth Gerringer. What a great Christmas present. Actually we received them several weeks earlier and have put them to good use during the cold weather of December. Thanks Elizabeth !

You Know You’re Poor When You’re Out Of Salt

I thought of my paternal grandmother yesterday. Mary (Martinek) Orrell used to say ‘You know you’re poor when you’re out of salt.’

Anyone could call her up at any time and and ask ‘if she wanted to go out?’ She never asked ‘where’ or ‘when will she get back’. Her only question was ‘when are you picking me up’? I’d take her shopping, among other places.

One day we had to buy salt. She had a fit as it cost 29 cents (about 1970) and she used to get it for 17 cents. Actually, she said her mother used to say the same expression.

Nora made a large pot of turkey noodle soup yesterday and used the last of the salt. When she told me we needed to buy more, I instantly thought of my grandmother. Nora has heard the story several times before and repeated it before I even mentioned it.

Gee, I bet salt is up to about 79 cents now.
